So you’re having a baby. There is so much to plan and so much to think about. You’re excited and nervous and tearful and happy all at the same time. And one thing that absolutely needs to be on your to-do list is booking a newborn photographer! Get those early days documented because everything will soon become such an incredible blur of a memory.
Since the beginning of my business, I’ve offered studio-style newborn photography sessions. My home studio in Central Massachusetts is well-loved and well-stocked with lots of the sweetest cozy blankets to photograph your precious little one on. I love doing these photos and snuggling tiny babies! And now, in addition to studio newborn sessions, I have also begun offering on-location lifestyle newborn sessions! These have a totally different feel from the studio, and it makes me so happy to be able to offer both options so folks can decide what truly fits their vision!
So what’s the difference between these two sessions? The main difference is that a studio newborn session is more posed and mostly photos of just baby (check out this gallery here)– an excellent option if you love those curly sleepy baby photos! The on-location lifestyle newborn session happens at your own home and is largely candid, capturing many of the little moments you may take for granted at first, but wish to remember later— snuggling baby in bed, changing a diaper, bath time, feeding, etc. All the photos featured in this post are from a recent lifestyle newborn session.
In addition to photos of baby alone and little details of things like hands and feet, the parents (and siblings too, if this is not your first baby) are included in a large number of the photos during a lifestyle newborn session at your home. As with my family lifestyle sessions, a really important thing to capture here is connection. This baby will never again look so small in your arms, your feelings and emotions may not ever again feel quite so big. These photos will tell a story of your newborn, and make you feel those feelings all over again every time you look at them.
And bonus, you don’t even have to leave your house! I’ll come right to you sometime within the first couple weeks (or later if you prefer) of your baby’s life, and we’ll wander around the rooms of your house capturing moments and love right in your own domain. To me, these images hold so much power because it is such a beautiful representation of your life with a new baby.
What rooms will we use for the session? We will be moving all over! The main areas I tend to use are the living room, master bedroom, and nursery. I don’t limit it to that though— we might make an excellent composition in your hallway, or do a sweet sink bath in the kitchen. I am drawn to beautiful light, so the photos aren’t always necessarily in the standard spots you’d expect.
Unlike my studio sessions where I use a lighting setup, I mainly use window light for in-home sessions. This means I don’t need to set up a whole bunch of equipment in your house, and the resulting look is perfectly environmental. Using natural light for these sessions helps me to be able to move around quickly and get different angles without missing moments. On location newborn sessions work especially well if you get a fair amount of natural light in your home.
I can create really lovely images both during studio sessions and during on location sessions– images that will make you feel allll the feelings— so how do you pick which type of session you’d like to do? First of all, I really don’t believe you can go wrong. Any photos of your baby are treasures! I’d recommend choosing the session type that is most in line with what you tend to connect with. Do you prefer a more polished style? Studio photos are definitely for you. Do you prefer raw emotion and real moments? Go with the lifestyle session. Or you can get the best of both worlds and do both— I offer an adjustment to the session fees if you’re booking more than one session for your newborn photos.
In the end, I will just never stop shouting how important it is to capture these days, whether it be in studio or in your home. They say ‘the hours are long but the years are short’, and it couldn’t be more true. Your baby will grow so so quickly and it is incredibly special to have tangible memories to revisit and remember the little details that seem to slip away so easily.
